Elizabeth Madigan, PhD, RN, FAAN Chief Executive Officer SIGMA
Liz Madigan, PhD, RN, FAAN, is the Chief Executive Officer of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma). She assumed the position in November 2017 following a 21-year period as a tenured professor at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Ohio. Her clinical background and her program of research focused on home health care. She has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and private foundations for her research. She is widely published in the area. During her time at Case Western she led the global health initiatives for the school of nursing and has provided consultation in multiple countries for home care and aging care in the community. She is a graduate of Wright State University, Dayton Ohio (BSN), The Ohio State University (MS in nursing) and Case Western Reserve (PhD), a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and proud member of Sigma Theta Tau.
Since assuming the position as Chief Executive Officer, she had led initiatives in strengthening the scholarship offerings from Sigma, raised funds for new research grants in conjunction with partner organizations, and obtained funding to support nursing students in accelerated baccalaureate and doctor of nursing practice programs. Sigma continues to work with universities around the world to develop chapters with recent changes to simplify the chapter development process. The two scholarly journals, Journal of Nursing Scholarship and Worldviews on Evidence Based Nursing are ranked in the top ten in impact factor among all nursing journals worldwide. The online continuing nursing education/continuing professional development program offers more than 100 contact hours of programming for Sigma members.
Billy Rosa, PhD, MBE, NP-BC, FAANP, FAAN
Billy Rosa is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Psycho-Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York.
In 2009, He received his BSN magna cum laude from NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing; In 2014, he was valedictorian of his MSN class at Hunter College. Dr. Rosa spent one year with the Human Resources for Health Program in Rwanda, East Africa (in 2015-2016), contributing to the curriculum content for the first Masters-prepared nursing cohort in the country. In 2017, he completed an interprofessional palliative care clinical fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York. In 2020, Billy completed his PhD and Master of Bioethics as an RWJF Future of Nursing Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Rosa has been recognized with numerous distinctions, including the international Spirit of Renewal Award from Sigma in 2017; the national Lillian Wald Humanitarian Award from the National League for Nursing in 2020; along with the national Public Health Service Award for Distinguished Practice in Nursing from the American Nurses Association. He is the editor of four books on leadership, global health, and holistic nursing and has contributed more than 150 publications in a host of diverse forums. He serves on the editorial boards for the Journal of Hospice & Palliative Nursing and Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, and as a board member for multiple global health and palliative care organizations. Dr. Rosa is a 2020-2021 International Council of Nurses Global Nursing Leadership Institute Scholar - A highly competitive global policy and leadership development program and serves as the Designated International Association for Hospice & Palliative Care Advocacy Focal Point for the United States of America. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the American College of Critical Care Medicine, and the New York Academy of Medicine.
